Following his remarks\, he’ll sit down for a conversation with Dean Celeste Watkins-Hayes alongside Ford School faculty experts to reflect on his work with the Department of Homeland Security and Department of Defense through questions submitted from the Ford School community on policy issues ranging from immigration to civil liberties. \nAbout Jeh Johnson\nJeh Johnson is a partner in the law firm of Paul\, Weiss\, Rifkind\, Wharton & Garrison\, LLP\, who in public life was Secretary of Homeland Security (2013-2017)\, General Counsel of the Department of Defense (2009-2012)\, General Counsel of the Department of the Air Force (1998-2001)\, and an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of New York (1989-1991). As Secretary of Homeland Security\, Johnson was the head of the third largest cabinet department of the U.S. government\, consisting of 230\,000 personnel and 22 components\, including TSA\, Customs and Border Protection\, Immigration and Customs Services\, U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services\, the Coast Guard\, the Secret Service\, and FEMA. \nLearn More>>

He received a Peabody Award for his 2020 PBS Frontline film “Whose Vote Counts” and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Commentary in 2018. He has also been a political analyst for MSNBC since 2019. \nHe is the author of “The Substance of Hope: Barack Obama and the Paradox of Progress” and “To the Break of Dawn: A Freestyle on the Hip Hop Aesthetic.” He is the editor or co-editor of several volumes\, including “The Matter of Black Lives\,” a collection of The New Yorker’s writings on race\, and “The Essential Kerner Commission Report.” He is the producer or co-producer on a number of documentaries\, including “Lincoln’s Dilemma\,” “Obama: In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union” and “Policing the Police.” \nDr. Cobb was educated at Jamaica High School in Queens\, New York; Howard University\, where he earned a B.A. in English; and Rutgers University\, where he completed his M.A. and doctorate in American history in 2003. He received fellowships from the Ford Foundation\, the Fulbright Foundation and the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
