Washington also makes the case for broader political consciousness of science and technology\, challenging audiences to see the world differently and challenge established paradigms in the history of medicine. Her latest book\, Carte Blanche: The Erosion of Medical Consent\, documents the alarming tale of how the right of Americans to say “no” to risky medical research is being violated. This program is offered as part of ASALH’s annual conference. \nAbout the Scholar and Author\nHarriet A. Washington is a prolific science writer\, editor and ethicist who is the author of the seminal Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present\, which won a National Book Critics Circle Award\, the PEN/Oakland Award\, and the American Library Association Black Caucus Nonfiction Award and five other well-received books\, including A Terrible Thing to Waste: Environmental Racism and its Assault on the American Mind\, as well as Carte Blanche: The Erosion of Informed Consent in Medical Research\, was published in 2021 by Columbia Global Reports. \nWashington is a Writing Fellow in Bioethics at Harvard Medical School\, a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine\, has been the 2015-2016 Miriam Shearing Fellow at the University of Nevada’s Black Mountain Institute. She has also been a Research Fellow in Medical Ethics at Harvard Medical School\, a Visiting Fellow at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health\, a visiting scholar at DePaul University College of Law and a senior research scholar at the National Center for Bioethics at Tuskegee University. She has held fellowships at Stanford University and teaches bioethics at Columbia University\, where she delivered the 2020 commencement speech to Columbia’s School of Public Health graduates and won Columbia’s 2020 Mailman School Of Public Health’s Public Health Leadership Award\, as well as its 2020-21 Kenneth and Mamie Clark Distinguished Lecture Award. Washington has written widely for popular publications and has been published in referenced books and journals such as Nature\, JAMA\, The American Journal of Public Health\, The New England Journal of Medicine\, the Harvard Public Health Review\, Isis\, and The Journal of Law\, Medicine\, and Ethics. She has been Editor of the Harvard Journal of Minority Public Health\, a guest Editor of the Journal of Law\, Medicine and Ethics and served as a reviewer for the Journal of the American Association of Bioethics and the Humanities. \nMs. Washington has also worked as a classical-music announcer for public radio and curates a medical-film series. \n

His latest book\, “Letters to Martin: Meditations on Democracy in Black America” (Chicago Review Press\, Jan 11\, 2022) evokes Martin Luther King Jr.’s letter from the Birmingham Jail and contains 12 meditations on many of the public issues currently faced by citizens in the United States —economic inequality\, freedom of assembly\, police brutality\, ongoing social class conflicts\, and geopolitics. \nJelks was an executive producer of the documentary “I\, Too\, Sing America: Langston Hughes Unfurled”\, and he currently teaches American Studies\, African Studies and African American Studies at the University of Kansas. His writings have appeared in the Boston Review and The Los Angeles Review of Books\, and he also serves as co-editor of the academic journal\, “American Studies.” \nAbout the Moderator\nVenise Wagner is professor of journalism at San Francisco State University where she has taught since 2001. She has a 12-year career as a reporter for several California dailies\, including The Orange County Register\, The San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle. She has won awards for her coverage of education and of religion/ethics. She has covered border issues\, religion and ethics\, schools and education\, urban issues and issues in the Bay Area’s various black communities. Venise served as chair of the Journalism Department from January 2008 to January 2013\, a department at the time with 500 students. She has a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois\, Champaign-Urban and a M.A. in International Policy Studies\, with an emphasis in Latin America from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey. \nShe is co-author/co-editor of “Reporting Inequality: Tools and Methods for Covering Race and Ethnicity\,” which was published in 2019 by Routledge. She is working on a forthcoming family memoir that explores the intergenerational impact of structural racism on her family from slavery to the 1970s.

The National Day of Racial Healing Virtual Livestream happens at Tuesday\, January 18\, 2022 at 3PM ET / 12PM PT. \nPBS Books is pleased to partner with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to host the National Day of Racial Healing with a PBS Books Gathering at 8PM ET | 5PM ET on January 18 for libraries and local PBS stations to share with their communities.  The American Library Association (ALA)\, the Association of Research Libraries (ARL)\, and the Society of American Archivists (SAA) have called upon their collective memberships to observe the day with reflection and action.  Library partners have expressed an interest in sharing the conversation later in the evening.  PBS Books will host the program at 8pm ET on its social channels\, so that libraries can easily share the content with their community on Facebook\, YT\, or by embedding it. Featuring Muhammad’s family members and close friends\, this program will provide a unique perspective on the Champ from the people who knew him best. This program will explore how Muhammad inspired those around him to follow in his footsteps through acts of courage\, generosity\, selflessness\, kindness\, and compassion. \nHis widow\, and vice chair and co-founder of the Ali Center\, Lonnie Ali\, will introduce the one-hour event. In addition to articles and reviews\, her other works include Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy(UVA Press\, 1997)\, Vernon Can Read! A Memoir\, a collaboration with Vernon Jordan (PublicAffairs\, 2001)\, Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History (Oxford University Press\, 2002)\, a volume of essays that she edited\, Andrew Johnson (Times Books/Henry Holt\, 2010) and\, with Peter S. Onuf\, “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs”: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination (Liveright Publishing\, 2016). Her most recent book is On Juneteenth (Liveright Publishing\, 2021). Gordon-Reed was the Vyvyan Harmsworth Visiting Professor of American History at the University of Oxford (Queens College) 2014-2015. Between 2010 and 2015\, she was the Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University.  She was the 2018-2019 President of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic. She is the current President of the Ames Foundation.  A selected list of her honors includes a fellowship from the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library\, a Guggenheim Fellowship in the humanities\, a MacArthur Fellowship\, the National Humanities Medal\, the National Book Award\, the Frederick Douglass Book Prize\, the George Washington Book Prize\, and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. Gordon-Reed served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Dartmouth College from 2010 to 2018.  She was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011 and was a member of the Academy’s Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences. In 2019\, she was elected as a member of the American Philosophical Society.

DESCRIPTION:﻿﻿﻿﻿ \nThursday\, August 26th at 7:00 PM ET | 6:00 PM CT: PBS Books presents this Author Talk with Kelli Jo Ford about her book Crooked Hallelujah.   \nIn collaboration with WTTW\, PBS Books is honored to host this virtual engagement event with author Kelli Jo Ford on August 26th as part of our dynamic\, sequel partnership with The Library of Congress for the 2021 Library of Congress National Book Festival “Open a Book\, Open the World.”  The conversation will be moderated by Melodi Serna\, Executive Director of the American Indian Center in Chicago.  In addition\, Allison Waukau\, an American Indian Library Association Executive Board member\, will join to ask a few questions\, as well.  \nAfter a successful partnership with The Library of Congress last year\, this second series of virtual author talks with legendary authors of our time will center on this year’s theme: “Open a Book\, Open the World.” The 2021 LOC Festival will be a 10-day event\, held from September 17-26\, 2021. Programming includes a 60-minute PBS Books special\, exploring the many worlds authors create\, investigate\, and share. Hosted by LeVar Burton\, the special will premiere on Sunday\, September 12\, from 6-7pm ET (Check your local listing). Additional PBS feed dates are Saturday\, September 18 at 7pm ET\, and Sunday\, September 19 at 1:30pm ET (more details to follow). Expect diverse discussions from incredible guests like Angie Thomas\, Tana French\, Viet Thanh Nguyen\, and Michael J. Fox.  \nThroughout the months of August and September\, PBS Books is hosting ten events to celebrate several authors who are part of this thrilling special. These intimate\, moderated Q&As will be moments to learn about the care and curiosity that generates great writing. The events will provide insights into the upcoming festival and will be targeted to particular national regions. As always\, this PBS Books content will be accessible to all audiences.  \nAbout the Author  \nKelli Jo Ford is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma. She is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships\, including the Paris Review’s Plimpton Prize\, the Everett Southwest Literary Award\, the Katherine Bakeless Nason Award at Bread Loaf\, a National Artist Fellowship by the Native Arts & Cultures Foundation\, and a Dobie Paisano Fellowship. Her fiction has appeared in the Paris Review\, Virginia Quarterly Review\, Missouri Review\, and the anthology Forty Stories: New Writing from Harper Perennial\, among other outlet.
